Nissan Rogue SUV will be cheaper

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — Nissan Motor Co. says its revamped Rogue SUV will be cheaper and more fuel-efficient than its rivals when it goes on sale in the U.S. in November.

Nissan unveiled the 2014 Rogue Tuesday at its North American technical center near Detroit. The Rogue’s European counterpart, the X-Train, was revealed at the same time at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany. The X-Train goes on sale early next year.
The Rogue, which is Nissan’s second best-selling vehicle in the U.S. after the Altima sedan, was last redesigned in 2008. It was badly in need of an upgrade after newer models from Honda, Ford and others went on sale. The small SUV segment is one of the fastest growing in the U.S., with sales up 60% since 2009.
Nissan says the new Rogue will get an estimated 33 miles per gallon on the highway, a 20 percent increase over the outgoing model. That beats its rivals in the highly competitive small SUV segment, including the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.
The new Rogue has a sleeker, more aerodynamic look on the outside and an upgraded interior, including seats that were specially developed to reduce fatigue and stress. It also has some new features, including LED headlights, a larger five-inch dashboard screen, optional third-row seats and a cargo area with adjustable shelves.

“This new Rogue puts Nissan at the head of the pack,” said Scott Shirley, Nissan’s chief marketing manager in the U.S.

The U.S. version of the Rogue still has its old 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, which has less power than the CR-V, but it’s paired with an upgraded transmission for better fuel economy. Nissan said it will reveal the X-Train’s engine and transmission lineup later. Both vehicles are built on a new platform shared with Nissan’s partner, French automaker Renault SA.

In the U.S., the Rogue will start at $22,490, or $455 less than the CR-V and $210 less than the Escape. The U.S. version will be built in Smyrna, Tenn.

Nissan is not a traditional Japanese car company

Nissan may be a Japanese automotive brand now in its 80th year, but the Nissan of today is vastly different and far more diverse than it has ever been.

At the Nissan 360 event in Los Angeles, the brand’s global head of product communications, Victor Nacif, boasted that more than 50 percent of Nissan’s management team is no longer Japanese.

Nissan, which is under the watchful eye of renown French-Lebanese-Brazilian CEO Carlos Ghosn, has been in an alliance with French manufacturer Renault (which owns 36.7 percent of the Japanese company) since 1999.
Ghosn was appointed the CEO of Nissan in June 2001, a time when the Japanese brand had $20 billion in debts and was seen as a sinking ship. It took Ghosn just one year to turn Nissan to profitability and within three years it was one of the most profitable car companies in the world.

The departure from traditional Japanese business mentality was the saving grace for Nissan, which rid itself of “keiretsu” – a Japanese operating model of buying parts only from suppliers that have cross-holdings in the company – and changed its official language from Japanese to English.

Today the Nissan-Renault alliance forms one of the largest automotive companies in the world, leading the world in electric vehicles on one-side and performance cars on the other.
Ghosn’s radical shift in company operations made him a hero in Japan, which led to his appointment as CEO of Renault in 2005. Making him the first person in history to control two companies on the Fortune Global 500 simultaneously.

In recent times Nissan has bet big on electric cars, setting itself up for a zero emission and zero fatality future.

“We seek to contribute to a sustainable society. It sounds like an impossible target, but it’s really the correct goal and we strive to get to it as close as possible.” Nacif said.

Despite its move away from traditional Japanese business mentality, Nissan has kept its core DNA pure. The company’s chief operating officer, Toshiyuki Shiga, said that three fundamental Japanese values remain. ‘Monozukuri’, working to constantly improve. ‘Omotenashi’, hospitality to the customers and ‘Hitozukuri, development of the team.

Under its Power 88 strategy, Nissan aims to have eight percent marketshare and eight percent profitability by 2016.

Mazda CX-3 Closer

Key Mazda project teams have signed off on the company’s all-new small crossover. Dubbed CX-3, though not officially named, motoring.com.au understands the car has now passed key preproduction gateways.

Although officially tight-lipped, Mazda sources have confirmed that the CX-3 is close to production-ready.

While nothing is clear on when the car will debut, it now seems likely the CX-3 will follow the new Mazda2 on sale late next year or in early 2015. A concept car could appear as early as March 2014, perhaps at the next Geneva motor show.

Mazda’s European design centre has led the look and feel of the car. It draws on lessons learned on new Mazda3 and Mazda2. Indeed, one senior MME official told motoring.com: “The car has a lot of [3] about it. It’s no box on wheels…”

The same Mazda exec was also bullish about a replacement for the aging CX-9.

“It will be built,” he said.

“America wants it. Russia wants it. You [Australia] want it… And we think there’s a market here [Europe] for it. Europe is almost over the line,” he opined.

To date Mazda Australia has been unable to publicly confirm plans for a new CX-9. Recently face lifted, the seven-seat has sold well for the brand but is often criticised for the thirst of its V6 petrol engine.
